Memorial and Legacy Grants

One time grants awarded to honor individuals or organizations who made significant contributions to the Montclair and North Essex communities.


Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Fund $2,250

Township of Montclair
Hortense Ridley Tate Memorial Grant to support college scholarships for Montclair High School graduates planning to study economics, finance or related college majors.  Hortense Ridley Tate was the first executive director of the YWCA of Montclair-North Essex and a tireless advocate for young people. FY2003

Unitarian Church of Montclair , Undoing Racism Committee$2,500

Emily H. Kennedy Memorial Grant - Emily H. Kennedy, a dear friend and lifelong member of the YWCA, advocated racial equality, world peace, and social justice.  Emily attended the final YWCA membership meeting and voted in favor of the transition to MFW only weeks before her death.  FY2004

Partners for Women and Justice $500

Author Kinoy Memorial Grant to help the Partners to meet two Donors' Matching Gift challenges totaling $50,000. Attorney Author Kinoy was an energetic and generous legal advisor to countless critical civil rights cases and causes.  FY2004

Montclair Fund for Educational Excellence$4,000

Marie Tafaro Memorial Grant.to support the new Arts Initiative for Montclair Public Schools. Marie Tafaro was a talented artist and dedicated teacher who developed special programs for young children and their parents at the YWCA until the day of her untimely death in an automobile accident. FY2003

The Neighborhood Council, Inc$2,500

George and Marian Waples Memorial Grant to the Neighborhood Council, which was an incubator for other community institutions during an era when racial segregation limited their options. FY2004

Trinity Presbyterian Student Aid$300

Trinity Presbyterian Church
Emoral Rudd Memorial Grantin lieu of flowers at Emoral’s memorial service.  Emoral Rudd was active in the YWCA, even when she had to attend meetings in a wheelchair.  Her husband, John H. Rudd, a successful black realtor was also a generous local philanthropist. FY2005

North East Regional Council, YWCA of the USA$1,600

Legacy grant in lieu of regional dues to support technical assistance to local affiliates, $1,600.

Montclair-Glen Ridge-Nutley Red Cross$3,000

FY2006 MFW Legacy Grant  toward lease of a new car to transport low-moderate-income elderly residents to medical appointments.  In 2006, volunteers drove residents on 8,400 trips.

New Eyes for the Needy$3,000

FY2007 MFW Legacy Grant  for New Eyes’ 75th Anniversary Celebration will provide prescription eyeglasses for 50 disadvantaged women and girls in Essex County.
