Competitive Grants

 

The Trustees of the Montclair Fund for Women are pleased to announce FY2005 grant awards to the following organizations:

 

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Omicron Xi Omega Chapter – $2,025 to support mandatory enrollment in their financial literacy workshop for AKA college scholarship recipients and college members; to send financial care packages to students in the fall and for an intergenerational field trip for senior citizens and students. The 2004 workshop funded by MFW received a Merrill Lynch Award for Outstanding Youth Program.

Girl Scout Council of Greater Essex and Hudson Counties – $3,000 to support MoneyPower financial literacy program for 150 girls, ages 6-13 and training for 30 adult volunteer leaders, including resource boxes with The One and Only Common Cents Series materials

National Council of Negro Women, Inc-Montclair Section –$3,000 to support financial literacy workshop series, one for young adult women of color, and one for senior-aged women in the Section's Grandparent Support program. The first workshop series, funded by MFW for 2004, was attended by more than 75 women.

Montclair Counseling Center - $2,500 to increase professional and expert volunteers in the pilot/model Outreach program of support groups for Montclair High School girls addressing personal and family challenges that threaten their academic performance and economic future. Most students in the group are African-American from low-moderate-income families.

Montclair Economic Development Corporation - $3,000 to support staff and materials for the Montclair South project intended to bring the revitalization of the town's South End business district in the Fourth Ward, on par with revitalization projects in the town's other business districts

Montclair Fund for Educational Excellence - $3,000 to support the IMANI College Lab (major grant from BestFoods, Inc.) and 2005 “ Who Will You be in the 21 st Century? the annual career conference for middle and high school students

Newark Emergency Services for Families, Inc - $2,500 emergency grant to keep the NESF Summer Camp for homeless children open for the first two weeks in August.

Partners for Women and Justice, Inc – Partners will launch a financial literacy pilot program for moderate-middle-income women and Partners' low-income legal services clients. $3,000

The Rachel Coalition - $3,000 to work with Partners for Women & Justice to recruit and train 20-30 attorneys and paralegals trained in domestic violence representation for low-income women. IOLTA Fund and Laurie Foundation are lead funders for the effort.

YWCA of Eastern Union County, Elizabeth, NJ – A one-time award of $2,300 to purchase new furnishings for one efficiency apartment in the new Transitional Housing facility for female victims of domestic violence, with their children. The shelter, a renovated Victorian house in a discrete location, will be opened in 2006. Women from Essex and Union Counties will be served.
